Why?
If ever there was a culinary experience that evoked precious memories of a bygone era, it's the picnic. Whether it reminds you of festive family excursions to the woods, beach or park, a simple impromptu meal in the backyard or a romantic repast with your sweetheart, a picnic is a chance to celebrate any occasion and enjoy a memorable meal in the beautiful outdoors.

What?
"Picnic," a curious word that sounds French and probably is. It was first used in France in the late 16th century as "pique-nique," meaning to pick at little bits of food, but was not adopted by English speakers until after 1800. At first, a picnic was a social event where each guest provided small dishes, like an early version of the potluck. Today, the picnic has evolved into an art form complete with designer baskets, matching linen, wine glasses and gourmet food.

Where?
We think our Hillside Herb Garden with its unique teahouses is the ideal place for a picnic. With three acres of Mediterranean herbs, lavender, roses and fruit trees, and an endless view of the hills stretching off in the distance, you'll think you've been transported to Tuscany or Provence! Or borrow one of our vintage cruiser bikes and peddle into town along the Ojai Bike Trail to Libbey Park where you'll find picnic tables under the shade of sprawling oak trees. Let our chefs prepare a special picnic for you. You can choose any selection from our menus, or ask the chefs to suggest specials of the day. We'll pack each ingredient separately so you can assemble your meal just as you prefer. Everything is packed in an old-fashioned picnic basket, ready to go to any location you choose.

To order a picnic, just call Room Service at extension 56. Please allow two and a half hours minimum preparation time.

We will deliver picnic baskets to your room, a teahouse in the Hillside Herb Garden, or to the Concierge Desk in the Lobby. After you return, please call Room Service so we can pick up the basket.
