New Artist's Cottage and Apothecary

Spa Ojai has opened a new artist's cottage where our guests will learn from local artists to work creatively in a variety of media, including pottery, painting, drawing, wreath making, and papermaking.

The new artist’s cottage will have a kiln, looms for various fiber arts such as weaving and batik prints, plus assorted materials to work with: string, charcoal, paper, plant materials, buttons, and fabric. Remember how delightful it was to play with crafts in elementary school?

The first of its kind anywhere, the new apothecary at the artist’s cottage is a special workplace for blending fresh herbs and essential oils into cream and lotion bases so you can create your own personalized spa products to take home with you. At spa Ojai, we use an old-fashioned, hand-hammered copper still imported from Europe – called an alambic – to distill the lavender and other herbs that are grown in our gardens. The result is a floral water distillate known as hydrosol that contains micromolecules of essential oil. Unlike “toilet waters,” hydrosols are natural, non-alcoholic, and suitable for many applications: skin care, hair care, personal care, and baby care, as well as culinary and household uses. Try spritzing freshly-laundered bed linens with lavender hydrosol, or spritzing rose hydrosol into your lingerie drawer. When traveling, keep a small atomizer of hydrosol in your hand luggage to refresh your face on long trips.
